Milestones CENTRAL COUNCIL FOR RESEARCH IN AYURVEDA & SIDDHA (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India)
Expedition to Antarctica The National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research, Department of Ocean Development, Govt. of India has been arranging expeditions to Antarctica for the last two decades. The experiences revealed that the scientists and other members of the expedition undergo Environmental Stress (cold), Mental Stress (Isolation and some Psychological factors) and other miscellaneous stress factors like Radiations, Rhythms, Food Preservatives and Additives. Keeping in view the unique strength of Ayurvedic Rasayana concepts and the need of the Antarctica Expedition Members, the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha conducted a clinical trial on expedition members to evaluate the effect of certain Ayurvedic foods and drinks on expedition members from 5th Dec, 2003 and executed a project “The effect of certain established Ayurvedic Rasayana, Food Supplement and Drink" (Antarctica Tea and Antarctica Ladoo), on ageing process of Antarctica expedition Members in cold climatic conditions”. These two formulations possess potent ingredients having diversified effects of rasayana (Immuno- stimulant action, Antioxidant action, Psycho physiological regulators, Thermoregulation, Adaptogenic activity, Nutritive effect and Appetizing action).
The outcome of this study may provide evidence based scientific data to improve the nutritional requirements of the expedition members so as to combat stress related complications to give their best in the interest of the nation and mankind. It may also reveal some interesting facts regarding the factors involved in the Aging Process and its relation with Prakriti. A team of scientists consisting of two scientists of the Council deputed for the expeditions. Sh. T. V. P. Bhaskara Rao, Director (Logistics) has informed that expedition's activities are nearing completion and the team is likely to reach Mumbai shortly.
