Strength of Ayurveda Q1. Is Ayurvedic treatment successful in the management of today’s challenging disorders like diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity etc? Ans. Yes, Ayurveda offers lots of herbal and herbo-mineral preparations for the management of disorders like Diabetes, Hypertension, and Obesity etc. Research on Ayurvedic drugs has shown their effectiveness in these disorders. Q2. What is the Ayurvedic approach to the maintenance of good health? Ans. Ayurveda has two main objectives one is the maintenance of health and the other is the cure of diseases. For maintenance of Health, Ayurveda has Sadvritta (Good conduct), Dincharya (Daily regime), Ritucharya (Seasonal regime), Panchakarma (Bio-cleansing procedures) and Rasayana (Rejuvenation Therapy). Q3. What are the specific diseases for which Ayurvedic treatment is safer and more effective than Allopathic medicines? Ans. There are Chronic disorders like Sinusitis, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Obesity; Psychosomatic disorders like Depression, Insomnia; Digestive disorders like Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Peptic ulcer, Inflammatory bowel diseases; Respiratory disorders like Asthma and COPD; Muscular skeletal disorders like Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Sciatica etc. and Degenerative disorders like Dementia, Parkinson’s disease etc. In these disorders, Allopathic medicines may produce side effects owing to their prolonged use and Ayurvedic drugs are proved to be effective and safe in these disorders. Q4. What is the role of Ayurveda in the management of disorders like AIDS and Cancer, Dengue, Chikunguniya? Ans. Ayurveda has proved effective in the management of disorders like AIDS, Cancer, Dengue, Chikungunya etc. Acarya Caraka has said that dosa vitiation, Prakriti of the patient and Adhisthana of roga are to be considered while treating any disease. By considering these factors, specific drug regimens can be prepared for any disease. e.g. for AIDS, various Rasayana drugs like Guduchi, Aswanganda etc. are available which can raise the immunity of the patient. They are to be selected as per the individual’s requirement. Q5. What is a holistic approach in Ayurveda? Ans. Ayurveda is not the treatment of signs and symptoms of disease, but it is a complete therapy for the cure of body, mind and soul. Q6. Prevention is better than cure is one of the concepts of Ayurveda. How can one prevent ill health? Ans. The concept of ‘Nidana Parivarjanam’ (avoiding causative foods and practices) is mentioned for all diseases in Ayurveda. For prevention of disease, one should follow Sadvritta (Good conduct), Dincharya (Daily regimen) & Ritucharya (Seasonal regimen) as advised in Ayurveda. Rules of eating are mentioned in Ayurvedic classics, besides the use of bio-cleansing procedure (Panchakarma) can be advocated for keeping the dosas normal and thus prevent ill health. Q7. Ayurveda treatment is popular for certain chronic diseases. What are those? Ans. Popularly, people come to Ayurvedic physicians for the treatment of chronic disorders like Asthma, Bronchitis, Diabetes Mellitus, Arthritis, Sciatica, Paralysis (Hemiplegia), Infertility, Oligospermia, Peptic Ulcer, Insomnia, Jaundice, Obesity, Sinusitis, Anorexia, Vitiligo, Baldness, Premature graying of hairs, Psoriasis, Eczema, Seborrhoic Dermatitis, Constipation, Piles, and Fistula-in-Ano etc. Q8. Ayurveda medicines are prepared from naturally occurring drugs which are considered to be safe, but is it true always? Ans. It is not true for all medicines. In Ayurveda, sources of drugs are herbal, metals, minerals, animal origin etc. Some of them are toxic even in small doses. These are used for medicine preparation only after following specified methods of purification and under the supervision of experienced Ayurvedic physicians. Q9. Some Ayurvedic medicines are palatable e.g. Chyavanprash, Haridra Khanda etc. but why are some medicines given in higher dosage? Ans. Usually medicines prepared from herbal sources need to be given in comparatively higher dosage because crude drugs are used for the preparation of medicines as compared with the extracted chemical or synthetic drugs in modern system of medicine or rasousadhis (metal, mineral based medicines) of Ayurveda. Q10. Ayurveda is considered to be in use since the creation of the universe and therefore, considered safe for human beings, but in this era of scientific thinking and changing environments, is any revalidation needed? Ans. Revalidation is certainly needed as there are changes in the environment, patients’ requirements etc. Moreover global acceptance of Ayurvedic medicine is possible only if modern techniques and tools are used to standardize the development of ayurvedic medicines. Q11. Why is honey or ginger juice added to some medicines? Ans. The concept of Anupana (Vehicle) is an integral part of classical Ayurvedic treatment. Adding of any vehicle like honey or ginger juice along with the medicine is supposed to enhance the action and assimilation of the drug in the body. Q12. Ayurvedic medicines are generally considered safe in comparison to Allopathic medicine. Are safety and toxicity studies done for all the medicines available in the market? Ans. As per WHO traditional medicines that are in use since centuries and mentioned in any classical text for a specific disease or condition, need not undergo safety and toxicity studies. Any new formulation however, needs a safety and toxicity evaluation, i.e Pre-Clinical data before Clinical Trials of new formulations is done and then sold in the market. Q13. Chyavanprash is synonymous with Ayurveda for the common man in India. How can we identify the genuine from adulterated products which are also available in the market? Ans. Chyavanprash Rasayana is in the form of Avaleha and in preparation of this medicine, certain classical parameters / testing procedures are adopted to know its genuine preparation apart from modern standard parameters.It should have a chocolate brown colour, and when pressed with the fingers, fingerprints are seen on it, and it shouldn’t stick to fingers. It should have a slight astringent smell and the taste should be mildly astringent or bitter and should not be too sweet. Q14. Swarna Bhasma along with honey is given to newborn babies as advised in Ayurveda. What is the scientific reason for this? Ans. Swarna Bhasma with Honey is supposed to provide immunity to the baby. So, it is given to a newborn to provide strength to fight against diseases. Q15. Like modern medical science, does Ayurveda also have multi-specialty branches? Ans.
