About the Institute

Ayurvedic Research Unit was established in the year 1959 as a regular department under National Institute of Mental Health (Presently NIMHANS) on the recommendation of Dr. Udupa Committee and subsequently amalgamated with CCRIMH (presently CCRAS)in 1971 under the technical guidance of Director / Vice - chancellor, NIMHANS.

This Institute started functioning in the newly constructed own building from June 2002. The 'In-Patient' department started functioning from 11th August 2003. The In- Patient facilities consist of Two General Wards and Four Special Wards with bed strength of 30 patients supported with well equipped Two Panchakarma Therapy rooms. 

The Institute is now relocated at RARIMD Bengaluru Campus.

Activities

ACAMHNS has scientists from Ayurvedic discipline working with a focused aim of scientific validation of Ayurvedic formulations and treatments in the treatment of neuro psychiatric disorders.

3.1 Clinical services: The institute has provided medical care at OPD and IPD sections. The institute has treated a total of 1,23,033 patients at out patient section and 7367 at inpatient section from inception to 30/09/2019 at the hospital from inception till 30/09/2019.

Special OPD for Mamsavata (Muscular dystrophy): During the reporting period (01/04/2019 to 30/09/2019) a total of 870 Muscular Dystrophy cases were treated at O.P.D level, out of which 725 were male and 145 were female patients.

Geriatric OPD: During the reporting period (01/04/2019 to 30/09/2019) a total of 1280 cases were treated at O.P.D level, out of which 788 were male and 492 were female.

De addiction OPD: The Ayurvedic De-addiction centre was inaugurated by Director General, CCRAS on 07/01/2018 at Tulasithota, Bengaluru.Regular OPD service commenced from 09/01/2018.

SCSP Programme: The project was functioning from 15.12.2015. During the reporting period a total of 10,092 population was surveyed and provided with medical care. ActivitiesThe programme has been transferred to RARIMD from 01/10/2020.

 

3.2 Research activities: (Completed IMR projects):

•         Clinical evaluation of Brahmi Ghrita and Jyotishmati taila in the management of Cognitive deficit

•         Clinical evaluation of Brahma Rasayana in the management of Manasmandata

•         Clinical evaluation of Saraswatha Ghrita in the management of Cognitive deficit

•         Clinical evaluation of Kalyanaka Ghrita in the management of Smritdourbalya

•         Clinical evaluation of Ashwagndha and Mandookaparni in the management of Manodwega

•         Clinical Evaluation of efficacy of Trayodashanga guggulu, Maharasanadi kwatha & PrasaraniTaila in the Management of Gridhrasi (Sciatica)

•         IMRCP on Retrospective study on safety & efficacy of Rasoushadhis    – A retrospective analysis

•         Awareness about Neuropsychiatric disorders among Ayurvedic doctors- KAP STUD 

 

3.3 Ongoing IMR-projects: 

•         Randomised placebo controlled double blind clinical trial on the efficacy of AYUSHMANAS in the management of Smritidourbalya (Cognitivedeficit)”.

•         Clinical evaluation of Pathyadi Kwatha and Anu Taila nasya in the management of Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine)

•         Evaluation of AYUSH-SR Tablet in Occupational stress among I T professionals - A Randomizes double blind placebo controlled clinical study)”.

•         Ayurveda Interventions for Anxiety disorders – A Systematic Review 

Effectiveness of the Role of Astangalavana and Srikhandasava as add on Treatment on Madatyaya (Alcohol Dependence) - An Open Level Clinical Trial (Sanctioned yet to be initiated).

Achievements

The Gujarat Ayurveda University awarded the institute with Hari Om Gold Medal during 1975 and 1990 for two controlled clinical studies conducted. Apart from the allotted research activities on Psychiatric & Neurological disorders, ACAMH&NS was also providing Ayurvedic treatment for general ailments at both OPD&IPD level. In addition, the center was organizing free medical camps in the nearby villages for needy people in order to popularize Ayurveda among public. The institute has published about 112 scientific publications and abstracts, 3 monographs. The institute has about 205 presentations and participations in its credit and has 1 best research paper awards. The centre has conducted 4 collaborative clinical research projects with NIMHANS. The Institute was inspected for conducting PhD studies by Shastha University. The reference library at the centre hosts 922 books and scientific journals.
