Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Gangtok

The Ayurveda Regional Research Institute, Gangtok was established in Sikkim on 9th June, 1979 with following objectives.

  • To undertake Clinical Trials for studying the safety and efficacy of Ayurvedic drugs.
  • To Survey and find out the new drug resources available in the State.
  • To cater out services through O.P.D., I.P.D and S.M.P.U.

The Out Patient Department (O.P.D) and Survey of Medicinal Plant Unit (S.M.P.U.) were started since inception. Indoor Patient Department (I.P.D.) and Pathology Laboratory were started in March, 1984. At present only O.P.D is functioning to provide Health care services. The Specialty Clinic of Panchkarma Therapy and Ksharsutra Treatment with basic facilities has been started from 2010.

This institute is one and only Ayurvedic Institute in entire Sikkim and it has tried to promote all its efforts for best possible service to people with guidance and the assigned work by the CCRAS.

The Institute has provided its expertise to State Plant Board and State Horticulture Board for Conservation, Preservation and Cultivation of Medicinal Plant in Sikkim. We initiated collaborative study of Medicinal plants of Sikkim Himalaya with Sikkim Central University and also collaborated with North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine, Pashighat, Arunachal Pradesh for documentation of local health tradition and documentation of folk medicine of North East India.

Ongoing Research Project

  • Tribal Health Care Research Programme.
  • Clinical Evaluation of Punarnava Guggulu and Rasna Saptaka Kashaya in the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata).
  • Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Programme under Scheduled Castes Sub Plan (SCSP)
  • Swasthya Rakshan Programme

Three clinical trial projects are proposed to allotted to this Institute under Intra Mural Research Project i.e Amalapitta (Hyperacidity), Aruchi (Anorexia), Grahani (Mal absorption syndrome) under Validation of Classical Ayurvedic Formulations.

Institute organizes Free Medical Health Camps in different part of the Sikkim regularly. Institute organized AROGYA MELA with collaboration of State Ayush Deptt. where all the branches of Allopathic Sciences taken active part. This year Institute successfully organized National Seminar on the topic "Value Addition of Ayurvedic Herbal Resources through good Agricultural & Field Collection Practice".

The Officers of the Institute have published several research papers in different National and International Journals.
