Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Mandi

Ayurveda Regional Research Institute, Mandi, initially started as survey unit of CCRAS at Joginder Nagar (H.P.) in July, 1970 was upgraded as Regional Research Centre (Ay.) in 1972. In 1983, it was transferred from Joginder Nagar to District Headquarter Mandi and in 1999, it was again upgraded as Regional Research Institute (Ay.) Mandi. The Institution was renamed as Ayurveda Regional Research Institute. Mandi in 2009. Presently the Institution operates from two places at Mandi i.e. Hospital, Research and Administrative Wing at Gandhi Bhavan, Mandi and Library/Stores Section at Bhiuli in a rented building. The main mandate of the Institute is to conduct clinical research and providing health care services through OPD and special OPD for Geriatric Health Care. Presently the institute is working on different Clinical Research Programmes such as National Pharnnaco-vigi lance Programme, Geriatric Health care and Flu-like Illness in addition to general OPD services. Govt. of Himachal Pradesh has allotted 5812 sq.m. land at Siyog. Pandoh, District Mandi on lease for the construction of new building for the Institute. The new campus will have OPD, IPD, Pharmacognosy, Microbiology, Phyto-chemicals, Pharmacy, Documentation Departments, High Altitude Medicinal Plants Survey and Herbarium. Ksharsutra and Panchkarma facilities with ten Panchkarma huts and Yoga Meditation Centre to promote health tourism in Himachal Pradesh. The H.P.P.W.D. is constructing the new campus which is likely to be completed by the end of 2017.

Undergoing Research Projects

(1) "Multi-centric double blind randomized Placebo controlled clinical study of Ayurvedic coded drug 'AYUSH-A' in the management of Mild Bronchial Asthma (Tamaka Shwasa)" (2) Clinical evaluation ot Panchamrit Lauha Gugulu and Panchguna Taila in the Management of Cervical Spondylosis (Greevagraha), (3) Swasthya Rakhsan Programme (Linked to Swachh Bharat Mission), (4) Ayurveda Mobile Swasthya Rakhshan Programme under Schedule Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP).

Clinical Research

The Clinical Research Department of the Institute also caters to certain diagnostic and Research Oriented Health Care Services through out-patient department. So far, the institute has completed clinical research on 1.Udar Krimi 2.Amalpitta 3.Mutra Krichha 4. Ivvak Roga 5.Yishma-jwara 6. Kamla 7 Raktachapadhikya 8. Medo Roga 9. Vata Rakta 10. Svitra 11. Kuposhana 12.Vvanbalvaishmya l3.Arsha 14. Amavata 15. Multicentric Open Clinical Trial of Dhatri Lauha in Iron Deficiency Anemia 16.Madhumeha-l 17.Uchhrakatchapa 18. Pravahika (JBS)-l 19,Madhumeha-II. The results have been published. Recently, clinical studies on Clinical Evaluation of Navayas Choorna in the management of Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and Clinical Evaluation of Kutjarishta in the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)-ll have been completed.

Collaborative Studies

Institute has co-ordinated the project on "Feasibility of introducing Ayurveda in National Reproductive and Child Health Programme at Primary Health Care (PHC) level- an operational study'' in two Blocks of District Kangra and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in collaboration with R.G.G.P.G. Ayurvedic College. Paprola (H.P.) in 2010-11.

Status of Indian Medicine & Folk Healing

The Institute co-ordinated the Project on ''Status of Indian Medicine and Folk Healing" with reference to its benefits to the general public with Smt. Shailaja Chandra, Principal Investigator, Former Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Depart of AYUSH.

Mobile Clinic Research Unit

Under Survey and Surveillance Programme (SAS). 9113 persons were examined and Under Community Health Care Programme, 13544 patients were examined and treated.

Ayurveda National Campaign Programme

The Institute successfully implemented "National Campaign programme on Ayurveda" in 2010-11 in collaboration with Govt. of Himachal Pradesh on Ksharasutra for Ano-rectal disorders. Geriatric care, Anemia Control, Management of chronic disorders and Mother and Child Health care through Ayurveda by organizing seminars and clinical camps at five places in Himachal Pradesh i.e. Katrain (Kullu), Rampur (Shimla). Hamirpur (Hamirpur), Sarkaghat (Mandi) and Solan (Solan).

Vector Borne Diseases

Institute conducted documentation of reported episodes of prevention/treatment of Vector Born diseases/ infectious diseases (Intra Mural Research) was conducted during 2010-11.

Medical Manuscripts

Institute collected information on digitization of Medical Manuscripts from concerned individuals in Shimla, Hamirpur, Una, Bilaspur, Kullu and nearby areas of Mandi and collected data for digitization work and obtained consent of 21 individuals and enrolled 645 books (handwritten and printed scripts) from the repositories during nine visits.

National Pharmaeo-vigilance Programme of ASU Drugs

A total of 22505 patient cases were studied at OPD level under this programme.

Research Oriented OPD Services (ROOS)

Institute has implemented Research Oriented OPD Services ( ROOS) from 1994-95 to 2007-08. Out of 40 diseases allocated by the Council, this institute has conducted trials on 6757 cases in 38 diseases.

Internship Training

The Institute has provided Internship Training to 25 BAMS students so far.

Seminars

The Institute organized "National Seminar on the Role of Ayurveda in the present Scenario with special reference to High Altitude Medicinal Plants and Health Tourism" at Mandi on 20th & 21st February 2010 and the Souvenir was also published. The scientists of the Institute have participated in 66 Continuing Medical Education (CME) Workshops and National Seminars.

Free Health checkup camps

51 Free Health check up camps were organized by the Institute in which 4752 patients were examined and treated.

Research Publications

26 research papers have been published by the Institute since inception in National/ International journals. Also one book on "Illustrative Guide of Aromatic Plants in Himachal Pradesh" has been published.

Television talks

Institute Scientist has delivered three television talks on Ayurvedic System on Doordarshan at local and National level.
