Dadhi

Dadhi (Curd) is one of the greatest probiotic food sources. From the time immemorial, human is consuming it and had become a very important part in our dietary items. The properties, actions, indications and contra indications of Dadhi are described in the classics of Ayurveda. It is easier to digest and is good for digestive system.

PROPERTIES OF DADHI                                                                        

  • Hot in potency (Ushna), increases digestive fire (Deepanam) unctuous (Snigdha) and increases strength and semen (Balashukrakrita).
  • Recommended in Dysuria (Mutrakrccha), Nasal Catarrh (Peenasa), Intermittent Fever with Rigors (Visama Jwara), Diarrhoea (Atisara), Loss of taste (Aruchi) and Emaciation (Karshya).

PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF DADHI FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES                               

Cow’s curd (Gavya Dadhi)- considered superior, promotes strength, good appetizer, stimulates digestive fire, nourishes and pacifies Vata dosha.

Buffalo’s curd (Mahisa Dadhi) – More fatty, Heavy for digestion, Aphrodisiac, vitiates Rakta.

Goat’s curd (Aja Dadhi) - Considered best, easily digestible in property and pacifies Tridosha. Recommended in Dyspnoea (Swasa), Cough (Kasa), Haemorrhoids, Debility and Increases Digestive Fire (Jataragni).

  • Contraindications :-
  • In night.
  • Don’t make it hot while using.
  • During seasons -Sharad, Grishma and Vasanta Ritu.

 

  •  Indication of Dadhi :-
  • Should be used in day time.
  • Should be used along with Ghee, Sugar, Green Gram Soup, Honey or Gooseberry (Amala).
  • In Diarrhoea (Atisara), Anorexia (Aruchi).
  • During seasons -Hemanta, Sishira and Varsha Ritu.

 

Other Properties of Curd

  • Curd  added with sugar (sarkara)

Good for health, mitigates thirst and feeling of burning sensation.

 

  • Curd added with jaggery(guda).

Nourishing, stoutening, aphrodisiac and heavy for digestion.
