Importance of Time in Digestion an Ayurvedic Perspective

In this era of technology people do not have time to take meal on time due their hectic life style. They take meal when they get time and when they want without giving any consideration to their appetite. This habit leads to indigestion, Hyperacidity, Distension, Constipation and many other problems. Time is key factor for good digestion and absorption.

In Ayurveda Acharyas have given their views as following

1. One should take meal twice a day.

2. One should not fast for more than Yugma Yama (six hours) and do not take meal or any food item Madhya Yama (within three hours) after taking food.

As per Acharya Caraka one should take food according to season as well as the age of the individual depending upon Agnibala (capacity of digestion). Season is division of time which affects appetite. In winter season there is an increase in appetite where as in summer season appetite decreases. So one should take meal at a proper time.
