The Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bengaluru, was established in 1971 as a Regional Research Centre. Over the years, the Institute has undergone several transformations and was successively known as the Regional Research Institute, National Ayurveda Dietetics Research Institute (NADRI), and Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Metabolic Disorders (RARIMD), before being upgraded as CARI in 2020. Recognizing its significant contributions to patient care, clinical research, and Ayurveda, the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, has accorded the Institute the status of ‘Centre of Excellence for Madhumeha (Diabetes)’.

CARI, Bengaluru, is also one of the Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centres (PPvCs) under the national pharmacovigilance programme, with responsibilities for monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions and misleading advertisements related to Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) drugs. In addition, the Institute has recently established the Ayurvedic Science Incubation Centre (ASIC) to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, technology development, and startup initiatives in the field of Ayurveda, thereby facilitating the translation of Ayurvedic research into practical and sustainable solutions.

The Institute houses a multidisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, technical personnel, and support staff engaged in diverse areas of Ayurvedic research, patient care, and integrative healthcare, with a commitment to consumer satisfaction and quality healthcare delivery. CARI, Bengaluru, is certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for Quality Management System certification under IS/ISO 9001:2015 standards, reflecting its commitment to maintaining quality in its institutional activities and services.

The Institute is currently undertaking 40 research studies covering various areas of Ayurveda and allied disciplines. Alongside its research activities, CARI provides comprehensive healthcare services to the public through its NABL and NABH accredited hospital wing. The healthcare facilities include Outpatient Department (OPD), 28-bedded Inpatient Department (IPD), Diagnostic Clinical Laboratory, Imaging (X-ray, Ultrasonography, ECG), Pharmacy, Ambulance for patient transportation and canteen. The hospital provides a range of specialized services, including Preventive and General Ayurveda consultations, Panchakarma, Yoga, Shalya & Marma Chikitsa, Shalakya Chikitsa (Eye & ENT), and Telemedicine. The Institute also conducts community health outreach programmes to extend healthcare services to the wider community.

For efficient and technology-enabled healthcare delivery, patients are registered through the AHMIS e-portal, while the laboratory information system facilitates SMS alerts and electronic laboratory reports. The Pharmacy uses dedicated software for inventory management, enabling systematic monitoring of medicine stocks, receipt and issue of medicines, and inventory records. The hospital is also registered with the ROHINI and GIC portals to facilitate eligible health insurance coverage for patients.

The Institute provides affordable and accessible healthcare services to all sections of society. Nominal registration charges are levied for patients, while all clinical services are provided free of cost to Below Poverty Line (BPL) beneficiaries. Senior citizens are provided a 60% discount on applicable charges. For other patients, nominal charges are levied for the various healthcare services, ensuring that quality Ayurvedic healthcare remains accessible and affordable to the public.

Under the Centre of Excellence scheme, evidence-based approaches for the prevention and management of diabetes are being validated and promoted. The Institute undertakes risk assessment and management of pre-diabetes and diabetes through integrated healthcare services, lifestyle modification guidelines, medicinal plants, and home remedies. Audio-visual educational materials are also made available to enhance public awareness regarding diabetes prevention and management. The Institute regularly conducts capacity-building programmes for students on diabetes management and research methodology, along with training programmes for the public on prevention and management of diabetes. Yoga sessions and healthy cooking classes are also conducted regularly to promote lifestyle modification and holistic health.

The Institute focuses its research primarily on metabolic disorders and Ayurveda dietetics, with additional research domains encompassing outreach healthcare, drug standardization, and medicinal plants. Currently, CARI is undertaking more than 40 research projects, many of which are being conducted in collaboration with premier academic, medical, agricultural, and research institutions including IISc Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, ICMR–National Institute of Traditional Medicine, Belagavi, CSIR–CFTRI Mysuru, ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi, and other reputed institutions. This collaborative research approach reflects CARI’s commitment to advancing evidence based Ayurvedic research and integrative healthcare, by integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific methodologies to enhance the understanding, prevention, treatment, and management of health conditions.

Mandate

To undertake clinical research focusing on metabolic disorders, Ayurveda dietetics, and healthcare services, along with outreach and community-based public health activities, medicinal plant surveys, drug standardization and research, and other assignments of national importance related to Ayurveda.

Achievements

Since its inception, the Institute has made significant contributions to Ayurvedic research, education, healthcare, and capacity building. It has produced 514 scientific publications and abstracts, 10 monographs, 8 book publications, 8 book chapters and 11 book reviews, and has contributed to 1,613 scientific presentations & participations in various academic activities. The Institute has received 3 Gold Medals, 4 Best Research Paper awards, and incentives for 2 best publications. The Reference Library houses approximately 2,092 books, important scientific journals, and CCRAS publications, including publications available for sale.

The Institute has organized and participated in numerous awareness camps, workshops, training programmes, brainstorming sessions, and conferences aimed at promoting Ayurveda, public health, research, and community engagement. CARI has actively participated in national and institutional initiatives including Poshan Maah under the National Nutrition Mission, International Day of Yoga, Ayurveda Day, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Rajbhasha activities, Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign, Vigilance Awareness Week, Constitution Day, Sports Day, Organ Donation Day, Arogya Fair, and the International Year of Millets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Institute catered to the healthcare needs of more than 2 lakh people and documented the outcomes of its healthcare interventions.

BAMS interns are regularly posted at the Institute for clinical and research training. CARI also provides Ayurveda orientation and training to MBBS interns, in accordance with the requirements of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The Institute obtained a patent for “Development of predictive system for diagnosing the risk of Diabetes based on Ayurveda principles using Machine Learning techniques” under the Centre of Excellence for Diabetes. CARI, Bengaluru, also served as a study site and nodal centre for another patented innovation, “Invention of the process for the preparation of an Ayurvedic herbal formulation (AYUSH-D) for the management of Diabetes.

Outreach programmes

Tribal Health Care Research Project (Tribal Sub Plan)

The institute conducts outreach clinical research programmes with public health orientation for tribal population. Tribal Health Care Research Project initiated in the year 2014 carries out demographic profiling, assessment of health status in the tribal dominated areas and the documentation is done in a research mode with a focus on commonly affecting disease conditions in the community.

Ayurveda Mobile Health Care Project (Scheduled Caste Sub Plan)

This Programme aims to provide Ayurvedic clinical services to the Scheduled Caste population at their doorstep and improve access to healthcare in underserved communities. The major activities include health and hygiene awareness, demographic assessment, evaluation of health status, provision of appropriate treatment, and implementation of research projects addressing common health problems prevalent in the selected areas.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) Programme

The Institute undertakes multicentric collaborative research in EMRS under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, focusing on health screening, tuberculosis, anaemia, haemoglobinopathies, malnutrition, and quality of life among tribal students. The programme evaluates Ayurvedic interventions for moderate anaemia and malnutrition, along with Ayurveda-based lifestyle practices, with emphasis on tolerability, treatment adherence, effectiveness, and improved health outcomes

Survey of Medicinal Plants

The Survey of Medicinal Plants Unit (SMPU) involves in conduct of Ethno-Medico-Botanical Survey in Forest Divisions of Karnataka, Goa, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Nilgiris. The unit is also involved in collection and supply of crude drug material, food, grains and vegetables for research purposes, documentation of folklore information, preparation and maintenance of Herbarium& Museum. The herbarium is recognized with an acronym “RRCBI” by intellectual body of Netherlands. It is acting as a pivot in implementation of various National schemes in promotion of the science. Since 1971 Survey of different regions like Bengaluru, Chickmagaluru, Chamarajnagar, Mysore, Shimoga ,Koppa, Tumkur, Kameng district, (Arunachal Pradesh), Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu), Coorg, Hoshangabadh (Madhya Pradesh), Annupur (Madhya Pradesh), Satna(Madhya Pradesh), Andaman and Nicobar, Ramanagar, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Uttara Kannada, Belgaum, Hassan, Mandya, Chitradurga, Dharawad, Davanagere, Bellary, Haveri, Gadag, Koppal, Bagalkot, Raichur, Vijayapura, Bidar, Hassan, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have been conducted. Identification and authentication of plant materials and Ayurvedic crude drugs are done for research purpose on a token payment.

Drug Standardization & Research

The Drug Standardization & Research Unit (DSRU) is mainly involved in laying down phytochemical and pharmacopoeial standards for single drugs and compound formulations (plant/animal/mineral origin), adopting and evaluating the methods of manufacture in Ayurveda and conduct physico-chemical studies for identification of quality and purity of the drugs/their substitutes and adulterants, pharmacognostical studies for the identification of drugs/ their substitutes and adulterants and laying down modified methods to be adopted for standardization for inclusion in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and for technical monograph work. Public can avail drug testing facilities including HPTLC for academic and research purpose on nominal payment basis.
