About the Institute
The Institute was started in the month of May’1971 in the name of “Survey of Medicinal Plants and Clinical Research” in the premises of Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Jalukbari, Guwahati and was subsequently upgraded to “Regional Research Centre of Ayurveda” in May’1979. The Institute got its own building in February’2022 at Borsojai, Beltola, Guwahati-28 and was re-christened as “Central Institute of Tribal Medicine” in 2008. The Institute was re-named as “North Eastern India Ayurveda Research Institute (NEIARI)” in December’2009. The Institute was again re-named as “Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Gastro Intestinal Disorders (RARIGID)” in May’2016. Since, December’2020 the Institute is known as “Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI)”.

Vision
The objective is to create empirical evidence via clinical research on non-communicable diseases, with a particular emphasis on lifestyle diseases, chronic illnesses, and preventive gastrointestinal disorders.
Mission
- To develop this peripheral institute of CCRAS into a model research institute for undertaking, coordinating and promoting clinical research in Ayurveda.
- To strengthen research and treatment in Ayurveda utilizing its classical treatment procedures viz. Panchkarma,
- To support diagnosis with advanced technology using Pathological and biochemical investigations.
- To impart Panchkarma Technician Training Course affiliated to Healthcare Sector Skill Council under NSDC for promotion & propagation of Ayurveda with a view to generate new job opportunities.

Activities
- Health care services through Out-Patient Department (OPD) and In-Patient Departments (IPDs)
- Ayurveda Health Centres North-East Plan Initiated by the Council in the year 2015-16 under the North eastern Plan (NE Plan).
- The objectives are: (i)To provide health care facility; (ii) Create Awareness about hygiene and (iii) prevention of diseases and promotion of health through Ayurveda.
- The Institute has provided health care services to 30,253 patients through special OPDs at district level during 2023-24. Total patients since inception-339778

- Critical appraisal and validation of Local Health Traditions (LHTs), Oral Health Traditions (OHTs) and Ethno Medicinal Practices (EMPs): An inclusive study among Ethnic communities of Northeast India (Sponsored by NMPB).

- Anaemia control among adolescent girls through Ayurveda interventions in five districts under Mission Utkarsh (Collaborative).
- ‘Acute and Ninety days repeated dose (Sub-chronic) oral toxicity studies of coded formulation Ayush-PTK’.
- ‘Evaluation of Neuroprotective and Antioxidant Effects of Vasantakusumakara rasa in a rat Model of Type II diabetes neuropathy
Achievements
- NABH accreditation obtained for Hospital on 26.10.2023.
- NABL accreditation obtained for pathology and bio-chemistry labs on 30.05.2023.
- This institute is running Panchkarma Technician Training Course accredited to Health Care Sector Skill Council since 2022-23
- The Central Ethics Committee of CCRAS is also registered under DHR (Department of Health Research), ICMR.
- MoUs have been done for the collaborative projects with College of Veterinary Science (CVSc), Guwahati, Assam.
