Dr. Achintya Mitra is presently serving as Assistant Director In-charge (Scientist-4) at the Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Gangtok, Sikkim, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
He obtained his B.A.M.S. (Ayurvedacharya) degree in 1996 and M.D. in Kayachikitsa (Ayurvedic Medicine) in 2001 from the University of Calcutta. In 2015, he completed a WHO Fellowship at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Dr. Mitra joined CCRAS in 2006, beginning his career at the National Institute of Panchakarma, Cheruthuruthy, Kerala, and subsequently served at CARI, Kolkata (West Bengal) and RARI, Ranikhet (Uttarakhand) before his present posting.
He has been actively involved in promoting and propagating Ayurveda and medicinal plant-based healthcare, with a special focus on providing support to underprivileged communities. He has organized numerous health camps, awareness programs, public lectures, training sessions, seminars, conferences, expos, and webinars for diverse stakeholders.
As a principal investigator, Dr. Mitra has successfully completed 32 major clinical trials under IMR/EMR/Collaborative programs, focusing particularly on geriatric health, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, vector-borne diseases, and psoriasis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he undertook clinical studies with Ayurvedic medicines, implemented community-level health interventions, conducted IEC campaigns, and spearheaded large-scale medicinal plantation drives.
Dr. Mitra has authored two books for the general public and published 118 research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals. He frequently contributes popular health articles in magazines and newspapers and has participated as an expert in over 100 live health programs on Doordarshan and All India Radio.
He has represented his research at more than 150 national and international conferences/seminars and is a life member of 13 prominent scientific and charitable organizations. In recognition of his contributions, he has received several awards, including the Guruji Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar Smriti Vigyan Samman and the Swami Vivekananda Yuva Samman.
Presently, Dr. Mitra serves as an expert member of various government and non-government bodies, including Ethics Committees, the National Panel of Experts of the Integrated Ethics Committee (ICMR), Centre of Excellence of AIIMS–AYUSH, DST (Government of West Bengal), and AYUSH & Medicinal Plant Advisory Bodies.
