Dr. Ashfaque Ahmad is an accomplished scholar and expert in Unani medicine, currently serving as a Research Officer (Unani) at the CCRAS-National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad, under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. His academic background includes a B.U.M.S. and M.D. (Unani) degree from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, which he completed in 1998. His expertise and leadership are evident from his roles as Principal of Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College in Gulbarga and Eram Unani Medical College in Lucknow.
With over 57 research papers published in both national and international journals—compiled on Research Gate—Dr. Ahmad has contributed significantly to academic discourse. He has also presented over 20 scientific papers in national & international seminars and conferences, showcasing his active engagement in advancing Unani medicine.
One of his major contributions is the preparation of e-books on two foundational Unani classics: ‘Al-Qanun fil-Tibb’ by Ibn Sina and ‘Kamil al-Sana al-Tibbiyyah’ by Ali ibn al-Abbas al-Majusi. Dr. Ahmad is also recognized for translating over a dozen medical manuscripts from Persian and Arabic into English, a project published by the National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage, Hyderabad. In addition to these scholarly works, he has compiled a descriptive catalogue of Unani manuscripts preserved at the TS Government Oriental Manuscripts Library and Research Institute (TSGOMLRI) in Hyderabad. This catalogue includes Unani medical literature from the Hippocratic period to the 16th century, further reflecting his dedication to preserving and advancing the knowledge of traditional medicine. As an External Expert on the Expert Committee of the Board of Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa under NCISM, Ministry of Ayush, Dr. Ahmad is responsible for framing the Competency-Based Curriculum and Syllabus for the postgraduate subject ‘KulliyatTibb’. Multilingual, Dr. Ahmad is proficient in Urdu, Hindi, English, Arabic, and Persian, enabling him to bridge linguistic gaps in Unani medical scholarship and further enhance his research and contributions.
