Dr. Sharad Daulatrao Pawar, is postgraduate in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology from Mumbai Veterinary College, Mumbai and completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from SPPU, Pune.
He started his career as ‘Lecturer’ at Mumbai Veterinary College, Mumbai for 3.9 yrs. He joined as Research Officer (Pharmacology) in the year 2006 at Central Research Institute for Siddha, Chennai under Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, New Delhi. After joining in CCRAS, New Delhi, he had carried out several Siddha and Ayurvedic drug safety and efficacy studies using laboratory animals and in vitro cell based techniques.
Contribution in National Programme of AYUSH:
Under Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme had carried out 90 days Oral Chronic safety profiling of 05 coded drugs (AYUSH OSTO, AYUSH LIV, AYUSH RP, AYUSH Rasayan A and AYUSH Rasayan B) in rats.
Under Preclinical Toxicity Testing (PCT) programme had carried out acute and 28 days Oral subacute safety profiling of 07 coded drugs (AYUSH UM, AYSUH GKM, AYUSH VPV, AYUSH SBS, AYUSH TAT, AYUSH ND, and AYUSH IT in mice and rats, respectively.
Contribution in Siddha System of Indian Medicine:
While working in Central Research Institute for Siddha had contributed towards evaluation of Siddha metallic preparations for safety, efficacy and estimation of metals in serum and tissue (vital organs) viz., 1. Anti-arthritic- Idivallathi mezhugu 2. Anti-anaemic- Aya chendooram 3. Anti-diabetic- Velvanga parpam
Siddha formulations like Vediannabedhi chendhooram (hepatoprotective), Sirupeelai kudinee (nephroprotective), Silasathu paavanal (anti-urolithiasis), Alli Kizhangu Chooranam (antiulcer), Siromani Bhopathi Kuligai (anti-inflammatory & analgesic) and Ajashtaga Maathirai (antiulcer) were evaluated for their safety and efficacy.
Contribution in Ayurveda System of Indian Medicine:
While serving as Research Officer (Pharmacology) at Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research (RAIFR), Pune, he executed, assigned mandate on in vitro Pharmacology testing and exploring fundamental principles of Ayurveda, using advanced high throughput technologies like proteomics, metabolomics and molecular biology. He had contributed for the establishment of First In vitro cell culture laboratory at RAIFR, Pune under CCRAS on animal and human cell/ molecular biology for evaluation of antidiabetic, anticancer and hepatoprotective effects of Ayurvedic drugs/plants using cell based molecular assays.
Presently, working as Assistant Director (Pharmacology) at Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Kolkata, he is actively involved as principle investigator/co-investigator in various IMR/EMR Collaborative research projects with National Institutions like, IIT, Guwahati; IIT (BHU); Varanasi, NIPER, Guwahati; NIPER, Kolkata; CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and SPPU, Pune on Osteoarthritis, High-altitude sickness, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), Drug-Drug Interactions, Cardiovascular parameters, Diabetes and aging etc., using in silico, in vitro cell based and in vivo studies.
Contribution in Literary work:
Comprehensive Technical Dossier (CTD) – were compiled in Para of ‘Pharmacology Part’ – for 13 Nos of plants. Similarly, compendium/Database (in the Series of IXth and Xth) – Pharmacology Part for total 60 medicinal plants.
Research Guidance/Training:
Guided 07 Ph.D. scholars, 32 Post-graduation students for their MD/M.V.Sc./M Pharm/M.Sc. research work so far. Currently, supervising 02 Postdoctoral Fellows.
Conducted two re-orientation Hands Training in Experimental Pharmacology for UG and PG students.
He had delivered more than 34 invited lectures in CME, Faculty Development Programme, short term trainings, workshops and seminars.
Publications:
He has more than 62 scientific publications in International/National Journals; more than 14 book chapters and presented more than 55 scientific papers in various conferences to his credit on above mentioned work which will disseminate the information and will be helpful to the scientific and farmer community.
He also holds life membership of scientific bodies/societies like Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), Proteomics Society of India, Chromatographic Society of India, Society for Ethnopharmacology, Indian Society of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. Alumni Association Bombay Veterinary College and Society for Journal of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy.
