Dr. Yashpal Bhardwaj is a Research Officer in Botany at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Bhubaneswar (Odisha), a peripheral institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. As the head of the Survey of Medicinal plant Unit (SMPU), he is engaged in Medico-Ethno-Botanical Surveys (MEBS) and medicinal plant studies.
Dr. Bhardwaj earned his PG and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 2014 and 2020, respectively. His doctoral research focused on the ecology of methane oxidizing bacterial communities in tropical dry deciduous forest soils. During his Ph.D., he was awarded the CSIR Junior and Senior Research Fellowships. He has also qualified several national-level examinations, including GATE-2018 (Life Sciences), CSIR-UGC NET JRF, and ICAR NET.
In December 2020, Dr. Bhardwaj joined CCRAS as an Assistant Research Officer in Botany at the Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Itanagar. His work their involved medico-ethno-botanical studies in remote tribal areas of Northeast India, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh, and the cultivation and conservation of economically significant medicinal plants. During this tenure, he received one EMR research project from the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) and one IMR research project from CCRAS HQ as Principal Investigator. He also served as a Co-Investigator on two completed IMR projects and other ongoing projects
Dr. Bhardwaj has published more than 15 research articles in esteemed international and national journals and contributed seven book chapters to international volumes. Additionally, he has co-authored a book published by CCRAS, New Delhi. He is actively involved in scientific writing and editing work, serving as an associate editor for the CCRAS research bulletin and reviewing articles for journals such as JDRAS and Ethnobotany Research and Applications. He is a natural member of the East Himalayan Society for Spermatophyte Taxonomy. He has participated in numerous training programs, workshops, and seminars.
