About Institute
The Institute activities started in the month of April 1970 and continued up to April 1979 under Composite Drug Research Scheme. It was established initially as Regional Research Institute (Ay.) in 1979 with the merger of survey of Medicinal Plants Unit (SMPU), Mobile Clinical Research Unit (MCRU) in addition to Community Health Care Research Programme. The Institute was upgraded as Central Research Institute (Ay.) in 1999. The Institute has shifted to its own building in August 2002. As per the notification of CCRAS dated 15th December 2009, the Institute has been re-upgraded in category “A” and named as National Research Institute for Ayurveda –Siddha Human Resource Development, Gwalior. Later the name of this Institute has been changed as Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Drug Development, Aamkho, Gwalior on 19th May 2016. Further the institute has been renamed as Regional Ayurveda Research Institute since 22nd December 2020.
This institute is presently functioning with various departments including Clinical (OPD & IPD), Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry etc. The Institute laboratories are accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The Hospital of the institute is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). The institute has also got the license as Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) for testing of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs by the Drug Controller (AYUSH), Madhya Pradesh. Besides, the Institute has Laboratory animal facility approved by the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA), Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, for conducting animal studies.

Vision
To develop scientific evidence in Ayurvedic Principles, drug therapies by way of integrating ancient wisdom with modern technology and to bring Ayurveda to the people through scientific innovations related to diagnostics, preventive, promotive as well as treatment methods and also introduce scientific research for sustained availability of quality natural resources, to translate them into products and processes and in synergy with concerned organizations to introduce these innovations into public health systems.

1.Ayurveda Section

- OPD facility: About 180-200 patients attending daily (3 OPD per day).
- IPD facilities: 25 bed strength with In-house diet supply for IPD patients.
- Ksharasutra Clinic and Operation theatre for Ano-rectal diseases.

b. Pathology & Biochemistry Department:
The Department is well equipped with modern sophisticated equipments including Fully Automatic Clinical Biochemistry Analyzer, Clinical Hematology Analyzer etc for carrying out biochemical and hematological evaluation of the patient samples. Major Pathological and Biochemical investigations of blood, stool, urine etc. are carried out in regular basis.
2. Department of Pharmacognosy & Ethno-Medico Botanical Survey Sections
The department focus on identification of crude drugs, macroscopic studies (both qualitative and quantitative), analysis of powdered drugs, qualitative test, i.e., determination of identity, purity and strength, quantitative microscopy and chemo-microscopic tests for cell contents of diagnostic value. The department maintains the reference specimen of the samples in Raw Drug Museum. Pharmacognostic studies on various drug plants/parts were carried out in the past several years and different monographs on Ayurvedic plants have been prepared.
3. Chemistry Section
The Department is engaged with Drug standardization, Shelf life studies and Isolation of marker compounds of medicinal plants and compound formulations. The drugs are identified and analyzed by using various sophisticated analytical instruments such as HPTLC, GC-MS, GC-MSHPLC, FTIR, AAS, UV Spectrophotometer etc. Various techniques to develop finger print profile of raw drugs, ingredients and compound formulations for analysis and standardization of ASU formulations are being carried out.
4. Pharmacology and Bio-Chemistry Sections
Toxicity, Pharmacology and Molecular biology studies of various Ayurvedic drugs (single, compound and herbo-mineral) were carried out in the Experimental Pharmacology and Animal Pathology sections as per the O.E.C.D. guidelines. The animal house facility is available as per CCSEA/GLP norms. Toxicological and pharmacological screening including acute, sub-acute and chronic toxicity studies and efficacy studies of various AYUSH drugs are being carried out in the department. Various facilities available are ECG and In vivo blood pressure monitoring system, Metabolic monitoring system, Any maze software, Electrophoresis setup, Multimode micro plate reader, Hematology analyzer, Histopathology and Deep freezer (-80℃) amenities. The Zebra fish facility for pre-clinical studies is available in the Biochemistry section.
Achievements
1. Clinical Research
The institute provides Health Care Services through OPD and IPD facilities. The institute has completed various IMR/EMR Clinical Research projects like Anemia, Vatarakta, Diabetes mellitus, Osteoarthritis etc. IMR/ EMR clinical projects on Sickle cell Anaemia, Dyslipidemia etc are being carried out.
2. National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH)
The Hospital of this institute has got National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) Accreditation.
3. National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)
The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories is an International agency which extends accreditation to laboratories. The Institute laboratories are accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017.The NABL accreditation institute has been accorded for chemical and biological scope.
4. Drug Testing Laboratory
The Drug controller (AYUSH) of Madhya Pradesh had accorded license to this institute for testing Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs. This facility is being used by various researchers and drug manufacturers.
5. Honors and Awards
The staffs of the institute had won many awards and honors from various prestigious institutions and organizations. Till date, the institute is in receipt of several best paper awards and cash awards for their contribution to the field of AYUSH research.
6. Publications
About 200 research papers have been published in various National and International Peer-Reviewed Journals and about 50 scientific papers have been presented in various scientific seminars, conferences and symposia. The work carried out in the institute has been included in various publications of the department AYUSH and ICMR.
7. Training and Guidance
The institute is conducting training related to Pre-Clinical studies for Graduate and Post Graduate scholars. Besides the students doing dissertation for UG/PG studies are being guided in this institute.
8. Collaboration
Being a pioneer in the field of herbal research the institute has collaboration with many institutions. This institute has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for carrying out collaborative research with leading Institute/ Medical college/Trustee body (IIT Indore, AIIMS Bhopal, ILBS New Delhi, INMAS, DRDO New Delhi, CDRI Lucknow, IITR Lucknow, ICMR Jabalpur and various Ayurvedic Colleges etc.).
9. Internship
Students from Government Ayurvedic College, Gwalior are doing internship in the institute as a part of BAMS Degree.
10. Seminars/ Conferences/ CME/Training Programme
a. National Seminar on Drug Discovery and Development Strategy for ASU&H Drugs Challenges and Future Perspectives held on 17-18 March 2023.
b. Seminar on pharmacovigilance for ASU&H Drugs held on 27 March 2023
c. CME on Current Trends on Safety, Standardization and Quality Control of ASU & H Drugs organized held on 11-16 September 2023.
d. Evidence Based Practice and Research Approaches for the management of Skin disorders in Ayurveda” scheduled held on 10th&11th February 2024
11. Completed Projects
Ten projects under IMR/EMR/Collaborative have been completed in 2023-24.
12. Ongoing Projects
Nineteen (19) IMR/EMR/Collaborative projects are ongoing in the institute.
13. Pharmacovigilance Programme
Implementation of National Pharmacovigilance Programme for ASU Drugs as Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre (PPC).
