About the Institute
Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, Port Blair is a peripheral institute under Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, New Delhi functioning at Chakkargaon, Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At present this unit is undertaking, co-ordinating, aiding and promoting research in Ayurvedic science with special emphasis on Tribal Health Care Research. The institute was initially established as ATHCRP (Ayurveda Tribal Health Care Research Project) at Malacca Village of Car Nicobar Island on February 14, 1984 by the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi. In the year 2016, CCRAS, New Delhi has re-designated this project i.e. Ayurveda Tribal Health Care Research Project into Regional Research Centre of Ayurveda, Port Blair.
From April, 2017 onwards the institute started functioning in 4 Nos. Type-II Quarters allotted by Andaman administration on temporary basis at Chakkargaon, Port Blair. The unit was upgraded into Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Port Blair in December 2020. Currently RARI, Port Blair is dedicated to advancing the field of Ayurveda through rigorous research and innovative practices. The institute has been working on the aspects of Tribal Health Care, Clinical Research, Literary Research, Medico-Ethno Botanical Survey and Medicinal Plant research since inception.

Vision
To develop scientific evidence in Ayurvedic Principles, drug therapies by way of integrating ancient wisdom with modern technology and to bring Ayurveda to the people through scientific innovations related to diagnostics, preventive, promotive as well as treatment methods and also introduce scientific research for sustained availability of quality natural resources, to translate them into products and processes and in synergy with concerned organizations to introduce these innovations into public health systems.

- To develop CCRAS into a dynamic, vibrant and model research organization for undertaking, coordinating, aiding and promoting research in Ayurveda.

Ongoing IMR Projects
- Assessment of acceptability of the comprehensive Ayurveda-based health care approach in the tribal community and effectiveness of individualized health care- Cluster randomized study under Tribal Health Care Research Programme – Tribal Sub-Plan.
- A cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and its association with Prakriti and NCD risk factors in the adult population of South Andaman district, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
- Multicentric IMR project – Development and Digitalization of Authentic Ayurvedic Raw Drugs and Herbarium for the Medicinal Plants Appearing in Ayurvedic Formularies of India in Mandatory Drug Testing Laboratories of CCRAS.
Ongoing Collaborative Projects
- Standardization of agro-techniques and nursery protocol of Centratherum anthelminthicum (L.) Kuntze. ex-Gamble, with ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
Achievements
- The Institutional Ethical Committee of the institute is registered under DHR(Department of Health Research), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
- MoU has been signed for the collaborative project with ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
