Clinical research is defined as the systematic study of health and illness in human participants to generate evidence on the safety, efficacy, effectiveness, and quality of medical interventions. In contemporary biomedical sciences, it encompasses a broad range of study designs including observational studies, interventional trials, epidemiological research, and health services research aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and overall healthcare delivery.

Clinical research is a cornerstone of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, designed to generate robust scientific evidence on the safety, efficacy, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of Ayurvedic formulations, therapies, and healthcare approaches.

Ayurveda is rooted in a distinct epistemology and philosophy of health and disease. Concepts such as Dosha, Dhatu, Agni, Srotas, और प्रकृति shape its diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic decisions. Thus, Ayurvedic clinical research requires methodologies that respect and capture these unique paradigms of assessment and outcome evaluation.

CCRAS therefore undertakes a dual approach in its clinical research endeavors:

Ayurveda-centric evaluation: Designing and conducting studies that validate Ayurvedic interventions within their own epistemological framework, applying Ayurvedic diagnostic criteria, individualized treatment protocols, and outcomes relevant to Ayurveda.
Integrative scientific evaluation: Employing contemporary biomedical methodologies such as randomized controlled trials, epidemiological research, health services research, and observational designs to examine Ayurvedic medicines and therapies in terms of safety, efficacy, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness.

Scope and Objectives

The scope of clinical research at CCRAS is broad and multidisciplinary, encompassing the validation of classical Ayurvedic formulations, exploration of new indications, and development of innovative therapeutic approaches. The primary objectives include:

Validation of Classical Formulations and Therapies – Conducting rigorous clinical studies to scientifically establish the safety, efficacy, tolerability, and effectiveness of formulations and therapies as mentioned in Ayurvedic classics.
New Indications of Classical Formulations – Investigating formulations documented in classical texts but repurposed for new indications based on emerging clinical experience.
Clinical Evaluation of New Ayurvedic Interventions– Clinical evaluation of newer medicinal plants of Indian origin, novel dosage forms derived from classical formulations, new drug combinations from Ayurvedic texts, and claims derived from traditional healing practices, folk medicine, and physician-reported experiences.
Standardization and SOP Development – Research focused on developing and validating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for use of Ayurvedic medicines, therapies and diagnostic practices, contributing to evidence-based practice guidelines.
Epidemiological Research – Studying disease patterns, risk factors, and determinants of health within communities to inform preventive and promotive healthcare strategies.
Promotive and Preventive Healthcare Research – Evaluating the role of Ayurveda in health promotion, disease prevention, rejuvenation, and healthy ageing.
Systematic Reviews and Evidence Synthesis – Conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses to consolidate existing evidence and strengthen the knowledge base for Ayurvedic interventions.
Public Health Research – Implementing community-based studies to examine health behaviors, accessibility and effectiveness of healthcare services, and the role of Ayurveda in epidemic and endemic situations.
Health Systems Research, Implementation Research, and Policy Research – Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of interventions, strategies for scaling up evidence-based Ayurveda practices, and analyzing health policies relevant to Ayurveda and public health.

CCRAS adopts a spectrum of clinical research designs to generate graded levels of evidence on Ayurvedic interventions, ranging from exploratory studies to large-scale community research. These approaches ensure that both Ayurveda’s epistemological frameworks और contemporary scientific standards are respected. The major categories include:

Research Frameworks and Collaborations

Clinical research at CCRAS is conducted through both intramural and collaborative frameworks, ensuring breadth, depth, and multidisciplinary engagement in evidence generation.

Intramural Research: Research Studies are carried out within the CCRAS network of institutes and peripheral units, leveraging the Council’s infrastructure, in-house expertise, and knowledge base.
Collaborative Research: CCRAS actively engages with a wide range of national and international institutions, fostering high-quality, multidisciplinary research. Collaborations are established with medical colleges, universities, research organizations, public health institutions, and hospitals to integrate Ayurveda with modern scientific methods. Such partnerships strengthen methodological rigor, broaden the scope of inquiry, and facilitate the translation of findings into policy and practice.
